Gas Safe, OFTEC & The Energy Saving Trust

In your search for a new boiler installation, boiler repair or boiler service you may come across a variety of logos, standards and qualifications. It’s important you check that your boiler engineer is fully qualified, and that any boiler work you have carried out conforms to the appropriate standards. We’ve explained a few of the more important ones below.

Gas Safe (Formerly CORGI)

The Gas Safe Register is the only official organisation for gas safety in the United Kingdom, Isle of Man and Guernsey.

Gas Safe Register replaced CORGI as the gas registration body in Great Britain and Isle of Man on 1 April 2009 and Northern Ireland and Guernsey on 1 April 2010. What this means to you, is that anyone who carries out any gas related work in your property by law has to be on the Gas Safe Register. This ensures they are properly qualified to carry out the work in a safe and effective manner. It’s vital that you check your gas engineer is Gas Safe Registered, and is carrying the appropriate identification card with the Gas Safe logo. OFTEC – The Oil Firing Technical Association

OFTEC is a Trade Association that represents manufacturers of oil firing and cooking equipment including oil boilers, cookers and storage tanks. They also run a CPS (Competent Persons Scheme) for people who work on oil-fired equipment.

OFTEC The OFTEC registration scheme helps you to identify engineers who are qualified and competent to install their plant and deliver their fuel in a safe manner.

Registered engineers can be identified by the usage of the OFTEC logo on their advertising materials and vehicles. If you require work on an oil boiler, or a new oil boiler installed, check the boiler engineer is OFTEC registered and you can be sure they have the competency to carry out the work safely.
